Getting started

What Go Fish is, whether it is free, and how to start a game in your browser.

What is Go Fish?

Go Fish is a classic card game played with a standard 52-card deck, usually by 2 to 4 players. Each player is dealt a hand and takes turns asking a specific opponent for a rank they already hold. A hit hands over all matching cards and the turn continues; a miss sends the asker fishing in the draw pool. Collecting all four cards of a rank sets that book aside, and the player with the most books when the deal ends wins.

Is Go Fish free to play online?

Yes. playgofish.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no interruptive video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls. Open the page and a game is ready to deal.

Do I need to download an app or create an account?

No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app store download and no sign-up. Your stats are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.

Where does Go Fish come from?

Go Fish is one of the oldest, simplest card games still commonly played, with roots as a children's pastime going back well over a century. It needs no special equipment beyond a standard deck, which is part of why it has stayed a go-to game for teaching kids to play cards.

Rules and scoring

The deal, asking and matching, going fish, books, and running out of cards.

How do you play Go Fish?

Deal 7 cards each for 2 players, 6 for 3, or 5 for 4, with the rest face down as the pool. On your turn, ask one opponent for a rank you already hold. If they have it, they give you every card of that rank and you go again. If not, you draw from the pool — draw the rank you asked for and you go again, draw anything else and the turn passes. Four cards of the same rank become a book. The game ends when all 13 books are claimed, and the player with the most books wins.

How many players can play?

This version plays you against 2 or 3 computer opponents — choose 2, 3, or 4 players total on the deal screen. Hand size adjusts automatically: 7 cards each for 2 players, 6 for 3, and 5 for 4.

What happens when I run out of cards?

If your hand empties, you draw a fresh hand from the pool at the start of your next turn — the same number of cards you started with. If the pool is also empty when that happens, you sit out for the rest of the deal while the remaining players finish.

Can I ask for a rank I do not have?

No. You may only ask an opponent for a rank you already hold at least one card of. This is a core Go Fish rule and the board will only let you select ranks that are actually in your hand.

What are the controls?

Tap or click the rank group you want to ask about, then tap or click the opponent to ask them. On the keyboard, arrow keys move the selection, Enter confirms it, Escape cancels, N deals a new game, and M toggles sound.

What is a "book"?

A book is all four cards of one rank — say, all four sevens. The moment your hand holds all four, they are automatically set aside in front of you and count toward your final score. Books cannot be broken back apart.

What happens if no one else has any cards to ask?

On the rare turn where every other player is out of cards but the pool still has some, asking is replaced with a Go Fish button that draws straight from the pool so the game can keep progressing toward the last books.

Winning and odds

How to ask smarter, track opponents, and give yourself the best chance at more books.

How do I win more games?

Ask for ranks you already hold multiples of — the more copies you have, the better your odds an opponent holds one too. Pay attention to every answer, including misses, since a "no" tells you that rank is not with that opponent. Rotate who you ask rather than fixating on one player, and watch for opponents who ask you for the same rank they just fished for — they likely just drew it.

How do the computer opponents play?

Each computer opponent looks at its own hand, favours asking for the rank it holds the most copies of, and picks among the players still holding cards. They do not see your hand or the pool — only what happens at the table, the same information you have.

What is the best opening move?

Look at your hand for the rank you hold the most copies of — two or three of a kind gives you the best odds of a hit right away. Asking about a rank you only have one of is a much longer shot.

Why did my win streak reset?

The current streak counts consecutive wins at one player count (2, 3, or 4 players). Any game that ends without you strictly topping the book count — including a tie — resets that player count's current streak to zero. Your longest streak is kept as a separate best.

Devices, saving, and accounts

Mobile play, supported browsers, local progress, and how the computer opponents work.

Does the game save my progress?

Games played, games won, your best number of books in a single game, and your win streak are saved locally in your browser, tracked separately for 2, 3, and 4 player games. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. A game in progress is not saved if you close the tab.

Can I play Go Fish on mobile?

Yes. The layout is built for touch: tap a rank in your hand, then tap the opponent you want to ask. The table, your hand, and the move log all fit on one portrait screen, and dealing a new game is instant with no page reload.

Can I play offline?

The game needs a connection to load the page the first time. After that, some browsers may keep the tab playable without a network, but there is no dedicated offline app or installer.

How do I reset my stats?

Open Stats from the game menu and use Reset progress, then confirm with the second tap. That clears games played, games won, best books, and streaks for all three player counts on this browser. It cannot be undone.

Which browsers are supported?

Any current browser with JavaScript: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop, plus their mobile versions. If the table does not respond, update the browser, allow scripts for this site, and reload.
