What is Go Fish

The classic game of asking and matching

Go Fish is played with a standard 52-card deck. Ask an opponent for a rank you hold, take their matching cards on a hit, or go fishing in the pool on a miss. Collect all four cards of a rank to set aside a book, and finish with more books than anyone else to win. Simple to learn, and every deal plays differently.

How to play

How to play Go Fish

Ask for what you already hold, take the hits, go fishing on a miss, and set aside every book of four you complete along the way.

  1. 1

    Read your hand

Everyone is dealt a hand from a shuffled 52-card deck — 7 cards each for 2 players, 6 for 3, or 5 for 4 — and the rest of the deck sits face down as the pool. Your own cards are the only ones you can see; every opponent hand shows only its card count.

  2. 2

Ask for a rank you hold

On your turn, pick a rank you already have at least one of — say, sevens — and ask one specific opponent if they have any. You can only ask about ranks already in your hand, so plan your questions around what you are holding.

  3. 3

    A hit keeps your turn

If that opponent has any cards of the rank you asked for, they must hand over every one of them, and you go again — ask anyone, for any rank you hold. Keep chaining hits and your turn can run for a while.

  4. 4

    A miss means Go Fish

If the opponent has none, they say "Go Fish" and you draw the top card from the pool. Draw the rank you asked for and you go again; draw anything else and play passes to the next player. Four of a kind in your hand becomes a book — set it aside and it counts toward your score.

Tips to win more games

  • Ask for the rank you hold the most copies of — the more you already have, the more likely an opponent has one too, and the closer you are to a book.
  • Remember every rank an opponent has already denied. If they said no to sevens once, do not waste another turn asking them again unless they might have drawn into one since.
  • Watch who draws after a miss. If an opponent goes fishing and then immediately asks you for the same rank, they probably just drew it.
  • Spread your early questions around the table rather than fixating on one opponent — you learn more about the whole game that way.
  • A long chain of hits is worth chasing: keep asking as long as you are matching, since every extra card narrows down what is left in the pool.
  • Late in the game, track how many of each rank are still unaccounted for. With few cards left, you can often deduce exactly who is holding what.

FAQ

Go Fish, answered

Straight answers about the free Go Fish card game you can play online in your browser.

What is Go Fish?

Go Fish is a classic card game played with a standard 52-card deck, usually by 2 to 4 players. Each player is dealt a hand and takes turns asking a specific opponent for a rank they already hold. A hit hands over all matching cards and the turn continues; a miss sends the asker fishing in the draw pool. Collecting all four cards of a rank sets that book aside, and the player with the most books when the deal ends wins.

How do you play Go Fish?

Deal 7 cards each for 2 players, 6 for 3, or 5 for 4, with the rest face down as the pool. On your turn, ask one opponent for a rank you already hold. If they have it, they give you every card of that rank and you go again. If not, you draw from the pool — draw the rank you asked for and you go again, draw anything else and the turn passes. Four cards of the same rank become a book. The game ends when all 13 books are claimed, and the player with the most books wins.

Is Go Fish free to play online?

Yes. playgofish.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no interruptive video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls. Open the page and a game is ready to deal.

Do I need to download an app or create an account?

No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app store download and no sign-up. Your stats are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.

How many players can play?

This version plays you against 2 or 3 computer opponents — choose 2, 3, or 4 players total on the deal screen. Hand size adjusts automatically: 7 cards each for 2 players, 6 for 3, and 5 for 4.

What happens when I run out of cards?

If your hand empties, you draw a fresh hand from the pool at the start of your next turn — the same number of cards you started with. If the pool is also empty when that happens, you sit out for the rest of the deal while the remaining players finish.

Can I ask for a rank I do not have?

No. You may only ask an opponent for a rank you already hold at least one card of. This is a core Go Fish rule and the board will only let you select ranks that are actually in your hand.

How do I win more games?

Ask for ranks you already hold multiples of — the more copies you have, the better your odds an opponent holds one too. Pay attention to every answer, including misses, since a "no" tells you that rank is not with that opponent. Rotate who you ask rather than fixating on one player, and watch for opponents who ask you for the same rank they just fished for — they likely just drew it.

How do the computer opponents play?

Each computer opponent looks at its own hand, favours asking for the rank it holds the most copies of, and picks among the players still holding cards. They do not see your hand or the pool — only what happens at the table, the same information you have.

Does the game save my progress?

Games played, games won, your best number of books in a single game, and your win streak are saved locally in your browser, tracked separately for 2, 3, and 4 player games. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. A game in progress is not saved if you close the tab.

Can I play Go Fish on mobile?

Yes. The layout is built for touch: tap a rank in your hand, then tap the opponent you want to ask. The table, your hand, and the move log all fit on one portrait screen, and dealing a new game is instant with no page reload.
